Where to See A night safari on a forested road may yield a sighting, but stay on public roads and read the tips on watching animals at night.

FISHING CAT Prionailurus viverrinus

This is a large wild cat – a full-grown male is the size of a dog. In other parts of its range it has been known to kill children. An adult can be quite self-assured. Sunela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka’s leading environmental architect, reports seeing a Fishing Cat standing its ground and snarling at her and her companions at her bungalow in Wasgomuwa when they were between the cat and its intended meal.

The animal has two white stripes extending up from the eye to its forehead. It also has two prominent white patches on the cheeks. The area around the muzzle is white on both the upper and lower jaws (a feature shared by the Rusty-spotted Cat). The fur is greyish, with the sides having blotches loosely forming longitudinal stripes. On the dorsal area, the longitudinal stripes are more distinct. Its tail is thick and appears heavier at the rear end.
